Ringing in a New Year

In terms of historic significance, New Year’s Day is the most celebrated holiday in the world. As a country, we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday of January. Many other notable events occurred in this first month. Here are some we thought you’d find interesting.

1782 – The first U.S. commercial bank opened as the Bank of North America in Philadelphia.

1848 – The California gold rush began with the accidental discovery of the precious metal during construction of a sawmill.

1878 – An Amendment granting women the right to vote was introduced in Congress. The amendment didn’t pass until 1920.

1959 – An American Airlines Boeing 707 made the first scheduled transcontinental U.S. flight, traveling from California to New York.

1961 – President John F. Kennedy conducted the first live televised presidential news conference, five days after taking office.

1972 – A Japanese soldier was discovered on Guam after he had spent 28 years hiding out in the jungle not knowing World War II had long since ended.

1987 – The Dow Jones industrial average first topped the 2,000 mark.

New Year’s Resolutions

If you start each year by making a resolution or two but find you rarely keep those, you’re definitely not alone. These plans are often aspirational and therefore difficult to achieve. With that in mind, click here to learn five new approaches to living up to those best intentions.

On the subject of resolutions, we thought it might be fun to share some of the goals Axiom team members are setting in the New Year:

  • Leah Driver – Visit five U.S. National Parks in 2022
  • Laura Adams – Declutter my home!
  • Marissa Hall – Save more. Spend less.
  • Rick Wyre – Maintain my morning meditation
  • Vaughan Scott – To weigh significantly less at the end of this year than I did at the beginning

Enjoy a fun, outdoor dining experience on the rooftop of 8UP. Choose from 6 private and fully enclosed igloos, each with a unique theme. The igloos have small heaters, but you’re advised to bundle up if it’s super cold! Vaughan and his group did just that as they celebrated a night out in their IgLou. The experience is available through March. https://www.opentable.com/r/8up-iglouisville-louisville
