Mike Grau, CFP®, RICP®
President

For more than 16 years, Mike Grau has been assisting clients in building, managing, preserving and transitioning their wealth. His strong background in accounting, a dedicated work ethic and a passionate interest in helping others make it possible for Mike to serve clients in all stages of their financial lives.

Mike began his career in financial advising with Smith Barney and in 2009 joined Wells Fargo Advisors. Prior to Smith Barney, he spent 20 years in accounting, serving as controller for local businesses in the Louisville area. During this time, he achieved the Certification in Management Accounting (CMA) designation.

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) professional, Mike works with individuals and organizations at Axiom Financial Strategies Group. He also holds the Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®) certification, giving him the knowledge to look deeper at income solutions as they relate to clients’ retirement plans.

These retirement plans are consistently monitored to ensure client portfolios are regularly updated in terms of allocating assets and minimizing risk. This business model has provided Axiom with tremendous growth. Its clients are true advocates for the firm, and their referrals make up a large portion of the company’s new clients.

These processes and procedures were so well regarded by the Kentucky region that Axiom was asked to travel the Commonwealth and present its system to other offices in the region, with the goal of helping them build successful practices and businesses.

Mike received a Bachelor of Science degree in both accounting and finance from The University of Dayton, Dayton, OH. In the community, Mike is a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity and The Community Kitchen in Jeffersonville, IN and supports various other local charities. He has attended the same church since moving to Louisville in 1982.

Mike and his wife, Kimberly, have two wonderful daughters, Hannah and Madison. His personal interests include golf, tennis, fitness training and traveling with his family.

Principal Responsibilities
“I’m a Certified Financial Planner. My other major responsibilities include helping to run the company and overseeing the firm’s asset management. I build and maintain the portfolios we use with our clients.”

Important Business Strategy
“I love hearing people’s stories. So one of the things I’ve always done in both my professional and personal life is to be a good listener. I do more listening than I do talking. I pay very keen attention to what they are saying, and I pride myself on that.”

Best Advice During Market Volatility
“When clients call to discuss volatility in the markets, often the best answer is, ‘We have a plan that takes into account times of market turbulence, and our level of risk is appropriate to achieve our long-term goals.’ Having a long-term plan and regular meetings helps us avoid knee-jerk reactions in times of high market volatility.”

Biggest Work Success
“I am so humbled by the number of people who have trusted me with their life savings.”

Future Work Goal
“If we could build something that presented an opportunity for younger people to eventually come in and take over and build on what we have created, that would be a great success for me.”

Business Leader You Admire
“I’m a big fan of Warren Buffet. He’s the guy I admire most from an investment point of view.”

Three Words to Describe You
“Positive. Altruistic. Spiritual.”

Something Most People Don’t Know About You
“When people see me, they see a suit and tie and someone who is 6 foot, 3 inches tall. And everyone thinks I’m this stern, business-like person. But actually, I’m a big goofball. I love to make people laugh and I’ll do the goofiest thing to make them laugh.”

Interesting Fact
“My father was a prison guard in the famous Sing Sing prison in Ossining, NY.”
