BEAT THE HEAT

As we usher in the month of August, it’s important to remember that this is typically the hottest month of the year. And as we’ve seen, unprecendented heat waves have been gripping almost every part of the country, at some point or another this summer. One thing not everyone knows is that heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States. Here are some timely tips to beat the heat.

Drink more fluids.

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.

Avoid liquids with dehydrating caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar.

Cut back on exercising on hot days. If you must exercise, drink 2 to 4 glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour.

Try to stay inside or in the shade from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing, a hat and sunglasses.

Always put on sunscreen SPF 15 or higher. The most effective products say “broad spectrum” or UVA/UVB on the label.

Be aware of heavy sweating, rapid pulse, hot/dry skin or pale/clammy skin, cramps in your leg or abdomen muscles. All could be signs of a heat disorder.

Axiom Updates

Adventures in Vietnam

CEO Vaughan Scott was off on another of his around-the-world adventures in May, when he led a group of 34 graduate students from the University of Louisville College of Business on a trip to Vietnam and Singapore. Joining the group was Nat Irvin, an Assistant Dean at the college and his wife, Chandra. Every MBA candidate and every grad student has the opportunity to participate in one of these amazing trips, as part of their tuition. The itinerary was organized by WorldStrides, a travel company that specializes in immersive educational experiences. We’ll feature the nine-day journey in two parts. This month, we highlight the first stop—Ho Chi Minh City. Click here for a Q&A with Vaughan and some amazing pics of the unique excursion.

“Breaking Out” for Fun

Some Axiom team members lightened up the work mood recently by participating in a team-building activity at a “BreakOut” room. The room they chose to escape from is called the Wild West. The scenario was that after striking gold, your band of prospectors are robbed, taken hostage and handcuffed inside the infamous Outhouse Kid’s Saloon. He’s rigged the place with all sorts of tricks, traps and puzzles to keep his loot secure. Your mission: break in, free your fellow compadres and steal back your gold. Participating in the fun were (L to R) Leah Driver, Gloria Bommarrito, Sarah Black, Jessie Oltman, Sean Broughton and Michelle Konkle.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

The College “Money Talk”

As students begin a new year, especially their senior year, there’s a lot of work to be done around college admission. Besides the process of helping them figure out where to apply, there’s also the important—yet sometimes difficult—task of discussing finances with your child. That involves everything from how much you’re prepared to spend to credit cards to how loans work. If you’re facing this challenge, here are 11 talks you might want to have, sooner rather than later.

How to Avoid Student Loan Scams

The Supreme Court recently struck down the administration’s student loan forgiveness plan. That means loan payments are poised to restart in October, with interest set to begin accruing in September. If this affects you or a student in your family, you’ll want to pay close attention to offers of help coming from all sorts of places. The FTC has issued a “consumer alert,” warning of scammers who will “take advantage of confusion around big news like this.” Click here for information on how to avoid these scams.
