Celebrating Mothers
The first Mother’s Day celebrated in America was in 1908, when Anna Jarvis organized a formal observance to honor her mother in West Virginia. It became a national holiday on May 9, 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed an official proclamation declaring the second Sunday in May as a time to honor mothers throughout the country.
There are many traditional ways to celebrate, like taking mom out to brunch, serving her breakfast in bed, doing her household chores that day or making a handmade card.
But did you know there are some uniquely Kentuckiana ways to celebrate mom?
In Paristown, a historic arts district just blocks from downtown Louisville, a Paristown Mother’s Day Market is held annually. This year it’s Sunday, May 10 from 10am to 2pm at Christy’s Garden.
Moms get free admission to the Louisville Zoo on Mother’s Day and free flowers at Kentucky Kingdom.
Enjoy a Mother’s Day Tea at Hermitage Farm in Oldham County or brunch at iconic Huber’s Orchard & Winery in Borden, Indiana. (see April Happenings below).
Other fun local activities include touring the Derby Museum or exploring the Falls of the Ohio State Park.
However you choose to celebrate a mom, be sure to make it a day filled with love and appreciation.
