A Fair to Remember
Welcome to August. One of the region’s most popular local traditions takes place this month—the Kentucky State Fair. It’s also one of the oldest state fairs in the country, dating back to 1816, when Fayette County farmer Lewis Sanders organized the first agricultural fair. It became an official state fair mandated by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1902.
The fair moved from city to city until 1907, when Louisville became its permanent home. Churchill Downs hosted the event on three occasions during World War II. The fair moved to its current 11-acre site at the Kentucky Exposition Center in 1956.
The Fair features 520 acres of indoor and outdoor fun. Along with the traditional exhibits, contests and thrilling rides, this year there will also be a special way to celebrate our country’s birthday. The United We Stand at 250 exhibit gives guests a chance to be part of history and make forever memories with family, while exploring Kentucky’s contributions to our nation’s story.
The fair runs from August 20-30. To purchase tickets and view the daily schedule and concert lineup, just go to the website.
