A TIME TO GIVE BACK

December always brings many holiday activities, regardless of your faith, background or beliefs. Why not make “giving back” a holiday tradition? There are so many ways to help. Here are a few ideas.

  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food bank.
  • Adopt a family in need and purchase toys or other recommended items.
  • Go through closets to find gently used items you could donate to a local shelter.
  • Collect books from friends, neighbors or coworkers and donate them to a library, school or family shelter.
  • Deliver cookies or treats to a fire station, police department or hospital. Many of these people will be working throughout the holidays.
  • Volunteer time at a senior citizen center.

Changes in 401k Contributions

Contribution limits for 401(k), 403(b), most 457 plans, and the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan will increase by $500 for 2025. Eligible taxpayers can contribute $23,500 to these accounts in 2025 (up from $23,000 last year. For employees aged 60, 61, 62, and 63, the 401(k) catch-up-contribution limit is changing as well. Instead of the usual $7,500, those in this age group can now contribute up to $11,250 in catch-up contributions. Add that to the regular $23,500 401(k) contribution limit for employees, and you’re looking at a maximum contribution of $34,750 in 2025.

 Growing Your 529 Plan

529 college savings plans do not have contribution deadlines. You can contribute to a plan throughout the year. However, you may want to complete your annual contributions by the end of the year in order to maximize state income tax benefits and the annual gift tax exclusion. This is because you can only deduct contributions made within the 12 months of the tax year for which you’re filing taxes. So it’s recommended that 529 contributions be part of your year-end planning. If you are an Indiana resident, you may be eligible for a 20% credit. For information about the Indiana 529 plan, click here.
