THE FUN & FORMULA OF PI DAY
It’s a geometry theory known to scientists, students and bakers, among others. We’re talking about the mathematical constant know as Pi. Pi Day is always celebrated on March 14 because 3/14 are the first three significant figures of pi, which is an infinite number. Pi can calculate the circumference of a circle by measuring the diameter—the distance straight across the circle’s middle—and multiplying that by the 3.14-plus number.
The number was given its name in 1706, when Welsh mathematician William Jones began using the Greek symbol for Pi, the first Greek letter in the words “periphery” and “perimeter.” Pi Day itself was founded by Larry Shaw, an employee of the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco in 1988.
Scientists use Pi to understand anything that involves a circle, sphere or curve, but there are also many practical applications of Pi in our everyday life. In construction, it’s used to calculate the size of pipes, wheels, tanks and other circular components in buildings. In medicine, it helps to calculate the volume of organs or tissues in certain scans. Pi even aids us in understanding natural phenomena like the spiral patterns in seashells.
Nowadays, people around the world take part in a fun tradition of having a slice of pie or pizza. How will you celebrate Pi Day?

Blessings in a Backpack
Members of the Axiom team recently volunteered to pack bags of groceries at Slate Elementary School. The event was organized by “Blessings in a Backpack Floyd County,” which serves 12 elementary schools. It’s estimated just under one in six of these children face food insecurity. Many of them leave Friday with the possibility of not having enough food to carry them through the weekend. The Blessings in a Backpack Floyd County program provides food for 1,829 children who might otherwise go hungry before returning to school on Monday.
