Celebrating Women

International Women’s Day was marked for the first timein Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19, 1911, with more than one million women and men attending rallies. The tradition of speaking out for women in America goes back to 1776, when first lady Abigail Smith Adams urged the Continental Congress to consider women’s rights and protections when drafting laws for the newly independent nation of America.

This year’s theme is “Give to Gain.” According to organizers, the theme “emphasizes the power of reciprocity and support. When people, organizations and communities give generously, opportunities and support for women increase. Giving is not a subtraction, it’s intentional multiplication. When women thrive, we all rise.”

Giving can mean many things. While it’s always helpful to make donations to nonprofits and organizations that support women, giving can also mean calling out stereotypes, questioning bias, celebrating women’s successes, and sharing knowledge and encouragement with others.

Let’s hear it for the ladies this month!
