EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES

On May 4, Churchill Downs will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby. Racing fans from around the world will gather to place their bets, sip mint juleps and enjoy the finery of the flashy hats and colorful outfits.

The race features the most impressive 3-year-old thoroughbreds, all striving to be the first horse around the 1+1⁄4 mile track, and receive the iconic garland of roses. The flowers give the Derby its nickname “Run for the Roses.”

The history of the garland is fascinating and dates back to the 19th century. In 1883, New York socialite E. Berry Wall presented roses to the women at a post-Derby party. Inspired by this gesture, Churchill Downs founder Meriwether Lewis Clark announced that roses were the official flower of the Kentucky Derby. In 1896, the tradition of draping a blanket of 554 red roses on the Derby winner began. The number of roses has stayed consistent ever since.

We hope you have an exciting Derby Day! Also, we want to remind you that our office will be closed Friday, May 3 for Oaks Day.

Chancellor’s Medallion Honors

Axiom salutes the 2024 recipients of IU Southeast’s Chancellor’s Medallion. They are both friends of Axiom, who were honored for their distinguished service to the university and community: Dana Huber, VP of distribution and public relations at Huber’s Orchard, Winery & Vineyards and the Starlight Distillery, and Gary Libs, chairperson of the board for Libs Paving Company, Inc., and president of Asphalt Supply Co. Inc.

Four juniors and four seniors were also honored with scholarships, based on their academic excellence, leadership and perseverance.

A Sunny Celebration

We were thrilled to experience the extraordinary and rare solar eclipse with friends, family and clients. The party was held on the rooftop of our building to give attendees the best view possible—and boy did Mother Nature deliver! From the first hint of darkness to totality, the spectacle was breathtaking. Partygoers also enjoyed delicious treats served up at the food truck from La Catrina Mexican Kitchen.

Adventures in Spain

Axiom President Mike Grau, his wife Kimberly, and daughters Hannah and Madison recently enjoyed a wonderful adventure in Europe. The family was visiting Hannah, who is studying architecture in Barcelona this semester. They got a festive send-off from American Airlines, because their flight happened to be the first one ever from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Barcelona. The family took in the city’s amazing architecture and enjoyed a sail on the Mediterranean Sea. But all agreed the most exciting part of the trip was celebrating Hannah’s recent engagement!
